Maryann Laboe, “Ms. Laboe”
High School Math Tutor
Maryann brings both brilliance and warmth to the Girlmath team. She holds a thesis master’s degree in chemical engineering, where her research focused on studying molecular energetic states at femtosecond time scales (one femtosecond is one quadrillionth of a second)! She currently works full-time as a protein engineer at a cancer-focused biotech company in the Bay, where she designs molecules that fight cancer. A skilled and enthusiastic educator, Maryann has served as a teaching assistant for a range of advanced technical courses and finds deep joy in helping students build confidence in math. She remembers being the student who thought about and solved problems "differently" than what was taught and wants to help and encourage students to think for themselves as they build functional intelligence that can be applied beyond math!
After graduating with a bachelor's in physiology, Maryann lived abroad in China for an academic year, where she studied and practiced the language. From there, she moved to Brazil, which is where she officially made the decision to pursue chemical engineering. During her time abroad, Maryann was not only reminded of her love for different cultures and perspectives, but also of her deep love of teaching and developing people! From volunteering at a children's school in Brazil to teaching lower level undergraduate math and higher level undergraduate chemical engineering as a graduate student, Maryann has extensive experience working with students at all different levels to learn new concepts and celebrate the small victories. She uses encouragement and fun to foster a comfortable environment to learn and grow!
She supports advanced 8th grade students as well as high schoolers studying Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Calculus.
